Festive preparations underway in Szeged – the city's Christmas tree arrived

The Christmas tree of Szeged being installed in the city center

The city's Christmas tree arrived yesterday at its traditional spot in downtown Szeged's Klauzál Square, marking the beginning of the festive season.

As is customary, Szeged’s Christmas tree is donated each year by a generous local family. This year’s tree, a magnificent specimen, came from the Tápé district. The donor, who prefers to remain anonymous, shared with the municipal media outlet szeged.hu that her family planted the tree in their garden 40 years ago.

In tandem with the tree's arrival, preparations for Szeged's holiday decor are well underway. Staff from Szeged Environment Management Nonprofit Ltd. have begun installing Christmas lights throughout the city center, with 100 kilometers of LED lights planned to illuminate the streets. One of the season’s highlights, the iconic Christmas stag, will be installed today, Thursday, in Dugonics Square.

Meanwhile, the festive transformation of Dóm Square is in full swing. Booths for the Christmas market are being set up alongside the city’s giant Advent wreath. The Ferris wheel, a returning favorite, has been spinning since early November, offering panoramic views of the city. Passers-by can already enjoy hot drinks, such as mulled wine, in Dóm, Dugonics, and Klauzál squares.

The 2024 Szeged Christmas Market – known locally as Szegedi Karácsonyi Hetek (Szeged Christmas Weeks) – will officially open next Friday, November 29. The festivities will kick off with the traditional parade led by stilt walkers, with the festive lights turned off just before the parade begins to enhance the spectacle.
