Katalin Karikó’s visit to Szeged highlights mRNA research and local connections
From November 6 to 9, 2024, Szeged hosted Nobel Laureate Katalin Karikó for events honoring her scientific achievements and ties to the city. Her visit was centered around the International mRNA Conference, which brought together leading researchers to discuss advancements in RNA technology.
The Szeged mRNA Conference
The International mRNA Conference, held on November 7–8, 2024, at the József Attila Study and Information Center in Szeged, was a landmark event in RNA research. Organized by the University of Szeged with support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the conference brought together world-renowned scientists to discuss the latest developments and future directions of mRNA technology.
Prominent speakers included Nobel Laureates Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, who played pivotal roles in the development of mRNA vaccines, as well as BioNTech CEO Uğur Şahin. These key figures were joined by researchers and innovators from 15 countries, making the event a truly international gathering.
The conference covered a range of topics that demonstrated the growing potential of mRNA technology. Sessions included discussions on RNA modifications that enhance the stability and efficiency of mRNA, lipid nanoparticle delivery systems that improve the transport of mRNA into cells, and applications of mRNA-based therapies for infectious diseases, cancer, and rare genetic disorders. The versatility of mRNA technology in vaccine development and beyond was emphasized, showcasing its potential as a transformative tool in modern medicine.
One of the key takeaways from the event was the discussion on the evolution of mRNA applications. Beyond its success in COVID-19 vaccines, researchers highlighted its promise in personalized medicine, particularly in targeting cancer tumors with precision and in treating complex genetic diseases.
Katalin Karikó’s programs in Szeged
Karikó’s programs began on November 6 with her participation in the University of Szeged’s Innovation Day. She delivered a talk on how to turn research into a successful business to a packed audience. Later that day, she attended the dedication of a commemorative tree planted in her honor on Göncz Árpád Promenade, next to the József Attila Study and Information Center.
On November 7, she officially opened the International mRNA Conference alongside Drew Weissman, her longtime collaborator and fellow Nobel Laureate. They also participated in a press conference to discuss the impact of mRNA technology and its future potential. Her visit concluded on November 9 with her formal appointment as a professor at the University of Szeged during the SZTE University Day celebration.
