University of Szeged introduces English-language psychology BA program

The University of Szeged has introduced a six-semester English-language Psychology BA program, open to Hungarian and international students.

In September 2024, the University of Szeged's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences launched an English-language Psychology BA program at its Institute of Psychology. This six-semester program welcomes both Hungarian and international students, including those participating in the Erasmus Scholarship Program for a semester.

According to Prof. Dr. Mihály Racsmány, head of the institute, the English-language program matches the academic rigor of its Hungarian counterpart and is designed to prepare students for further studies in master's programs. This alignment is due to the Bologna system standardizing psychology education across Europe. “Transitioning the program to English was relatively simple, as psychology education in Europe largely relies on English resources,” Racsmány explained. Additionally, elective courses like sociology, philosophy, and digital culture – offered in English – complement the core curriculum.

A diverse student body and global aspirations

In its inaugural year, the program primarily attracted Hungarian students, alongside one Turkish student and a handful of Erasmus exchange students. However, the university aims to increase its international enrollment significantly in the future.

“Our long-term vision is to recruit internationally acclaimed instructors, which is difficult to achieve if teaching is limited to Hungarian,” Racsmány noted. By offering programs in English, the university hopes to create an attractive environment for both students and faculty from around the globe.

Meeting the demand for psychology education

Psychology remains one of the University of Szeged’s most sought-after disciplines. The Hungarian-language program consistently garners more applicants than available spots, leading to some of the highest admission scores at the university. To address this demand, the English-language BA program was introduced, supported by newly hired, dynamic instructors. Many of these young professionals bring fresh perspectives and energy to the institute, complementing the expertise of its seasoned faculty.

Benefits of an international academic environment

The program’s early feedback suggests that international students contribute diverse perspectives, enriching classroom discussions. Racsmány observed that these students are often more relaxed and willing to ask questions, which fosters a more dynamic and inclusive learning atmosphere. “Both our students and instructors benefit from the international environment,” he remarked.

Application process and eligibility

Hungarian students can apply through the Felvi.hu platform, while international candidates may submit applications via the SZTE DreamApply platform or the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship. Applicants are required to submit a motivational letter and pass an entrance exam based on chapters from the Atkinson & Hilgard’s Introduction to Psychology textbook. Once admitted, international students are paired with a Hungarian mentor and must complete two semesters of Hungarian language courses.

Countries eligible for application

Applications are open to students from over 100 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Nigeria, Turkey, and Vietnam, among others. A complete list of eligible countries is available on the university’s website.
