A new fully electric BYD articulated bus is currently being tested in Szeged. During the test run – from today until September 8 – the bus is free to ride.

The BYD eBus B18, an 18.15-meter-long low-floor vehicle, is the first articulated eBus produced in Hungary. It will be charged at the Volánbusz plant in Szeged using the Blueberry Plus R2, already in service.

Since the bus will not offer the usual services of Szeged – WiFi, on-board ticket machines, and passenger information – the ride on the test vehicle will be free of charge, according to the decision of the assembly, announced Sándor Nagy, deputy mayor of Szeged, on Facebook.

This is the second passenger test for the bus. During its first test run in Zalaegerszeg in July, the test bus covered around 2000 kilometers.

With a total capacity of 511 kWh, the BYD eBus B18's lithium-iron phosphate batteries can be charged using both plug-in technology and a special current collector. The 18.15-meter-long vehicle is powered by BYD's own proprietary wheel motors, mounted on the third axle, just behind the articulated joint.

The engines have a peak power of 150 kW each. According to the manufacturer, they have a range of up to 420 kilometers. Cameras replace the traditional exterior mirrors, while a blind spot monitoring system, also based on cameras, helps to ensure safe driving.

Timetable of the test run can be found here.
