Road works on Bertalan Bridge with half lane closures from today

The Bertalan Bridge in Szeged will be partly closed for two months starting today due to road construction.

On the Bertalan Lajos Tisza Bridge on the main road 43 in Szeged, three dilatation structures will be replaced from Monday, August 26, with the help of external professionals. The work is expected to take two months, Magyar Közút (ENG: Hungarian Public Roads), the company responsible for operating and maintaining nearly 31,000 km of national roads, announced in a statement.

According to the statement, two out of the four lanes will be open to traffic during the construction.

The road works began today with the closure of two lanes from Újszeged to Szeged. Currently, there is only one lane of traffic in each direction. The work is expected to take two months, but based on past experience, it could be completed sooner.

When asked about the timing of the works – given that school starts in a week, resulting in heavy traffic – the municipality was informed by Magyar Közút that this was not a planned intervention. A routine inspection revealed that some of the dilatation structures of the bridge needed to be repaired as soon as possible. In such cases, preparations will be started immediately so that the necessary interventions can be carried out as soon as possible, Magyar Közút said.
