Conference commemorating the 145th anniversary of the great flood of Szeged
A scientific conference commemorating the 145th anniversary of the great flood that destroyed Szeged in 1879 was held today, March 11, at the Szent-Györgyi Albert Agóra cultural center. The conference was organized by the Lower Tisza Region Water Directorate.
The biggest natural disaster in the history of Szeged was remembered by representatives of scientific life as well as organizations, institutions, and authorities involved in flood protection and city planning.
At the opening, representatives of the General Directorate of Water Management, the Szeged City Municipality, the National University of Public Service, the Csongrád-Csanád County Chamber of Engineers, the Szeged Branch of the Hungarian Hydrological Society, and the Lower Tisza Region Water Directorate greeted the participants.
The scientific conference included lectures by scientists of SZTE as well as professionals of the involved institutions about the catchment area, the flood protection system, and the city structure before and after the big flood of 1879, as well as the natural disaster itself.

To commemorate the biggest natural disaster of the city, all the bells of the Votive Church of Szeged will be ringed on March 12 at 2 a.m. The Bell of Heroes, the second biggest bell in Hungary, weighing 8,5 tonnes and ringed only a handful of times a year, will be ringed too.
