Art exhibition of Tömörkény Secondary School on display at REÖK

Education-Art-Tradition is the title of the exhibition that opened yesterday at the REÖK arts center in Szeged. The new exhibit provides a comprehensive picture of the six-decade history of art education at the Tömörkény István Secondary School.

Several award-winning artists are among the former teachers and former students of the institution whose artworks occupy both floors of the Reök Palace.

Béla Péter Kakuszi, the director of Tömörkény István High School and Art High School, summarized the latest exhibition of REÖK with one word: respect. The exhibition opening, held on Friday, was the closing event of a one-year series of programs celebrating the school's 125th anniversary.

In 1961, fine and applied arts education was launched at Tömörkény, third in the country after Budapest and Pécs. As Béla Péter Kakuszi explained, during the more than six decades that have passed since then, approximately two thousand students and budding artists have been helped to develop their talents within the institution's walls. He emphasized that the exhibition Education–Art–Tradition is a tribute to past and present art teachers and students.

Róbert Nátyi, the lead curator of REÖK, explained that the main goal of the exhibition was to provide an authentic picture of the essence, values, traditions, and spirit of the art school's past six decades. He also added that while preparing the exhibition, they tried to condense the diversity of the decades and disciplines into a subjective kaleidoscope, starting with the founding masters and ending with the present creators of the school.

The exhibition will be on display at REÖK until March 17, 2024.
