42nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition in Szeged

A selection of award-winning images from the 42nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition can now be seen at Klauzál Square. The outdoor exhibit in the heart of Szeged will remain on display until November 30, 2024.

As in previous years, the 42nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition was organized by the Photojournalist Department of MÚOSZ – the National Association of Hungarian Journalists – and supported by the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center.

250 photographers applied for the competition with 2470 entries – a total of 6801 images. The competition was open to photos taken in 2023, except for a few series categories where some older photos were accepted as part of long-term projects.

After the online pre-selection, the jury members selected the winners in a public session at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest on February 2-4, 2024. The exhibition, presenting the winning works, opened with the award ceremony on April 11 in Budapest.

The Hungarian Press Photo Contest and Exhibition has served for the last 42 years as the largest showcase of photojournalism in Hungary. This year's awarded photos document various topics in the country and abroad, including social, health, and environmental issues, sports, news, and everyday life.

János Török, who works for the Szeged-based Délmagyarország, won third place in the portrait category with his series on Mária Káposzta, an old woman living alone on her farm in Ásotthalom, without running water and electricity. Török also received the special prize for the best photojournalist working in the counties, now for the third time.
