16th Lotus Days at the Botanical Garden of Szeged

The 16th Lotus Days at Szeged Botanical Garden will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 29-30, 2023.

The event celebrates the largest open-air Indian lotus collection in Central Europe, blooming each year at the Botanical Garden.

During Lotus Days, the Botanical Garden awaits visitors with South- and Southeast-Asian-themed programs. Dance, music, yoga, martial arts performances, workshops, and a crafts market will be part of the event on both days.

On Saturday, stage programs include a yoga practice, classical Indian dance performances — Bharatanatyam by the Kala Sangam Dance Group in the morning and Odissi by the Parvati Dance Group in the afternoon — kung fu and ninjutsu performances, a concert by the Namaha mantra music group, and a taiko performance, among others.

Sunday's stage programs also start with a yoga practice, followed by a Mediball demonstration and a koto performance. At noon, another dance group, Trigatu performs Indian dances based on classical Bharatanatyam, folk, martial arts, and contemporary elements. Concerts dominate the afternoon, and the closing performance, the Calcutta Trio concert, starts at 5 p.m.

Guided tours — in Hungarian — can be joined on both days to learn more about the Indian Lotus and other Far Eastern plants found in the Botanical Garden of Szeged.

As in previous years, visitors can literally taste South and Southeast Asia as four local restaurants — Taj Mahal, Gourmet Garden, Őrangyal, and Kínai Nagy Fal — will be on-site selling Asian food.

Detailed programs for Saturday and Sunday can be found on the website of the organizer, the Botanical Garden of the University of Szeged (in Hungarian).
