21st MittelCinemaFest films screening in Szeged

The Italian Cultural Institute in Budapest and the Istituto Luce-Cinecittà present the 21st MittelCinemaFest, an Italian film festival, between November 4-12, 2023. Three of the festival films will be screened in Szeged between November 7-9, at Belvárosi Mozi.

Comandante, one of the most powerful works of the 21st MittelCinemaFest, will be screened in Szeged too (see program below). Edoardo De Angelis' film is based on real events. Salvatore Todaro (Pierfrancesco Favino), a World War II naval officer, showed exemplary humanity in the Battle of the Atlantic. His submarine towed to safety the 26 survivors of the Belgian ship he had sunk. When the rescued captain asked him why he put himself at such great risk in defiance of the orders of his own command, Salvatore Todaro replied with the following words that would become legendary: "Others, unlike me, do not have two thousand years of civilization behind them."
