Plácido Domingo to reopen Budapest Opera House on March 12

"After the restoration work at the Budapest Opera House on Andrássy Avenue that lasted nearly five seasons, the moment everyone, including international audiences, have been waiting for is finally here." - announced the Opera House on its website.

The historic building, also known as the Ybl Palace, is restored to its original glory and equipped with the most modern technologies, including state-of-the-art stage machinery.

The Opera House opens its gates again with a three-day festival between March 12 and 14, 2022, beginning with an orchestral gala conducted by Plácido Domingo, Ádám Medveczky, Gergely Kesselyákand general music director Balázs Kocsár.

The Hungarian National Ballet also returns to the historic building with a new production of Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling on March 14.

Repertoire productions such as Die Frau ohne Schatten, Mefistofele, Simon Boccanegra, Porgy and Bess, Don Carlo, Le nozze di Figaro, Andrea Chénier, La fanciulla del West, Un ballo in mascheraDie Zauberflöte and ballet pieces Romeo and Juliet and Onegin also return to the stage of the Opera House.

This season, the audience can enjoy performances of outstanding Hungarian artists and international guest stars, including Plácido Domingo as Simon Boccanegra, Erwin Schrott as Mefistofele, Matthew Polenzani as Don Carlo, and Sir Willard White as Bluebeard and Porgy.

Stefan Soltész returns with Die Frau Ohne Schatten, and Paul Connelly is to work with the ballet ensemble in Onegin.

Guided tours in the historical building will be available again from March.
