Cake of Hungary 2023
The Cake of Hungary in 2023 is called "Spicces Füge Respectus" — a creation of master confectioner Pál Lakatos from Szigetszentmiklós. The Sugar-Free Cake of Hungary is the "Kikelet" by confectioner Zsófia Lawal-Papp from Makó.
The Cake of Hungary competition — announced each year by the Hungarian Confectionery Trade Association — was organized for the 17th time in 2023. Every year, the Trade Association requires competing cakes to be made with popular Hungarian flavors and fruits, and strictly contain only high-quality, natural, and healthy ingredients.
This year, as a novelty in the competition announcement, it was also required that at least one ingredient from a basket made up of Hungarikums and national values — Újfehértó cherries, ground paprika from Kalocsa, aszú wine from Tokaj, Hungarian acacia honey, and Hungarian herbs — had to be used in the competing cakes.
Pál Lakatos from Levendula és Kert Confectionery in Szigetszentmiklós was inspired by a fig ice cream he tasted during a holiday at Lake Balaton to create the "Spicces Füge Respectus", this year's winning cake.
In the Cake of Hungary 2023 contest, the second place went to "Betyáros málna" created by Krisztián Füredi (Hisztéria Confectionery, Tápiószecső), while "Merengő" by Barbara Szabóné Tarján (Nonna Dessert Bar, Szada) took the third place.
Sugar-free Cake of Hungary 2023
The Sugar-Free Cake of Hungary competition is announced every year by the Egy Csepp Figyelem Foundation together with the Hungarian Confectionery Trade Association and runs parallel with the Cake of Hungary competition.
This year's winner is Zsófia Lawal-Papp, the confectioner of Papp Cukrászda in Makó, with her sugar-free cake called Kikelet (translates to spring in English).
"The winning confectioner strove for a refreshing harmony when creating the cake. She dreamed up a cake around a drop of black tea, and created the perfect harmony with blueberries and a touch of lavender, which is completed by the vanilla white chocolate mousse and the almond and lemon sponge made without grain flour." — reads the announcement of the Hungarian Confectionery Trade Association.
The second place in the Sugar-free Cake of Hungary 2023 competition went to Ádám Novák and László Csonka, confectioners of the REÖK Artisan Confectionery in Szeged. Their "Tökmag málna" creation will be available at REÖK and Delimo confectioneries in Szeged from August 20.
Gabriella Raffer, the confectioner of G&D Artisan Confectionery in Salgótarján, finished third for the creation of the "Randevú" cake.
From August 19, you can taste the cakes in the Várkert Bazaar in Magyar Ízek Utcája and in hundreds of pastry shops across the country. The list of selling confectioneries can be found on the website www.cukraszat.net from August 17, the list is expected to expand every day until August 19.
