World Press Photo 2023 Exhibition at the Hungarian National Museum
The 2023 World Press Photo traveling exhibition arrived in Budapest and can be visited at the Hungarian National Museum. The temporary exhibition opened on Friday, September 22, and can be visited until Sunday, November 5.
The annual World Press Photo competition recognizes and awards the best photojournalistic and documentary photos of the previous year. The structure of the annual competition and judging was changed in 2022 with the introduction of a regional strategy to provide a more global and geographically balanced view of world events. Entries sent from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, South-East Asia and Oceania will be evaluated separately by region.
"The purpose of World Press Photo is to show everything that, although it is not happening here and is not part of our everyday life, still exists. We can come across questions and topics that are happening in the world, about which we not only know little, but in many cases, we can hardly comprehend." — reads the National Museum's website.
The 94 winning images were chosen by an independent jury that reviewed more than 60,448 photographs entered by 3,752 photographers.
In addition to World Press Photo, one of the world's largest and most famous photo exhibitions, several accompanying exhibits await visitors, such as the 20-year-old Hungarian National Geographic photos or the 24.hu press photo exhibition on the museum's fence and the FotoKozma exhibition in the museum's garden.
