Rehearsals begin for Countess Maritza at the Szeged National Theater

The Szeged National Theater has begun rehearsals for Countess Maritza, the world-famous operetta by Emmerich (Imre) Kálmán, Julius Brammer, and Alfred Grünwald. The production, directed by Gábor M. Koltai with the participation of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra, will premiere on March 28 in the Grand Theater.

One of Imre Kálmán’s most beloved works, Countess Maritza, has been performed with great success on the world’s leading stages, from New York to Japan. The operetta combines elements of Viennese waltz melodies and Hungarian folk influences, reflecting Kálmán’s heritage. It premiered in 1924 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and quickly became an international sensation.

The story follows the wealthy and beautiful Countess Maritza, who pretends to be engaged to deter fortune-hunting suitors. However, her plan backfires when unexpected romance and complications arise, particularly with the estate’s new manager, who hides a secret of his own.

At the first table read, General Director László Barnák highlighted the challenges ahead, noting that after the recent premiere of The Magic Flute, the company is once again taking on a demanding artistic project. This production will feature a collaboration between the drama and opera departments, along with returning guest artists and the Szeged Symphony Orchestra.

“For me, the combination of drama and playfulness is essential in operetta, especially in this piece,” said director Gábor M. Koltai. “Operetta is a virtuoso genre where the unity of drama and music must be achieved.” He also revealed that the production will feature two rarely performed songs in Hungary, making it a unique experience for Szeged audiences.

Conductor Tamás Pál, who is leading the musical direction, shared his enthusiasm: “I love this piece immensely. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, this production presents a significant challenge for all involved, but the audience is guaranteed an entertaining experience.”

Rehearsals are now in full swing as the cast, creative team, and musicians prepare to bring this timeless masterpiece to life for Szeged audiences.
