New exhibitions open at Rector's Building

Two new exhibitions have opened at the Rector's Building of the University of Szeged.

The first, a photo exhibition celebrating the 70th birthday of Nobel Prize winner Katalin Karikó, was inaugurated on Thursday, January 16, in the left atrium. This exhibition features photographs of Karikó, a distinguished SZTE graduate, taken by Ádám Kovács-Jerney and István Sahin-Tóth, both photographers from the University of Szeged. The opening ceremony was led by Dr. László Szabados, scientific advisor at the HUN-REN Biological Research Center of Szeged and a former classmate of Karikó. Visitors can view the Karikó exhibition in the left atrium of the SZTE Rector's Office on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until February 28, 2025.

The second exhibition, featuring works by celebrated painter and graphic artist Márta Kopasz, opened in the right atrium on Tuesday, January 21. Born in Szeged in 1911, Kopasz was a notable figure in the local art scene of the 20th century. Her small prints have been exhibited both nationally and internationally in cities such as Budapest, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, Krakow, Cannes, Como, and Warsaw. In 1997, she was awarded honorary citizenship of Szeged, a distinction she shares with Katalin Karikó, making her the first woman to receive this honor in the city. This exhibition also commemorates the Day of Hungarian Culture, celebrated annually on January 22nd, and will remain on display in the Rector's building until April 4, 2025.
