SZTE among the world's top 500 universities in the ARWU 2024 list
The 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's world ranking of university excellence, was published in mid-August. Four Hungarian universities made it to the ranking, with the University of Szeged (SZTE) ranked 401-500th in the world. SZTE improved several hundred places and achieved the best result among Hungarian universities, announced SZTE’s press office.
ARWU is one of three globally benchmarked rankings, alongside THE (Times Higher Education) and QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). For years, SZTE has been one of the leading universities in Hungary in all three rankings.
The experts who compiled the list looked at the teaching and research work of more than 2,500 higher education institutions, and the world's top 1,000 universities were included in the public ranking. The list is based on several indicators of excellence: quality of teaching, professional recognition of lecturers, researchers and alumni (e.g. number of Nobel Prize or Fields Medal winners), publication record, citations of scientific papers, and academic performance per capita.
"The University of Szeged is a prestigious institution of higher education that boasts two Nobel laureates, Albert Szent-Györgyi (1937) and Katalin Karikó (2023); Professor Szent-Györgyi received the award as a researcher at our university, while Professor Karikó is an alumna and currently a professor at our university," said Prof. Dr. László Rovó, rector of the University of Szeged.
"SZTE has improved its performance in almost all indicators of the ARWU ranking. As reflected in the results, the University of Szeged values institutional excellence as a core value, which it supports through its collaborations with outstanding international and Hungarian researchers, its broad partnerships, its interdisciplinary approach across disciplines, its leading teaching, research, arts, and medical activities, and its active role in society."
The top ten universities in the ranking are from the US and the UK, with Harvard University topping the list, followed by Stanford University and MIT. Several of SZTE's partner universities participating in the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) are among the top 150 universities in the world (Université Paris-Saclay, LMU Munich, Lund University). This helps the University of Szeged to improve excellence in both teaching and research collaborations and is reflected in its increasingly prominent position in the rankings, reads the university's statement.
