Rehearsals for My Fair Lady started this week
The first premiere of this year's theater season at the Szeged National Theater will be the My Fair Lady musical, based on G. B. Shaw's Pygmalion. The actors, led by László Barnák, the director of the Szeged National Theater and the play's director, started rehearsals on Tuesday.
Shaw's poignant, witty parable of the eternal duel between man and woman, with wonderful songs by Lerner and Loewe, is one of the most beautiful and beloved musicals. After the huge success of its Broadway premiere, My Fair Lady conquered theaters worldwide. It became a true classic with the multi-Oscar-winning 1964 film directed by George Cukor.
László Barnák pointed out that the audience can expect a spectacular and entertaining production. However, in addition to the humor, they will also emphasize how much people can change, whether they are willing to change for the sake of another person.
Behind the lighthearted, humorous story is a much more painful one: the tragedy of our own pettiness, professional arrogance, or other human failings that blind us to the humanity and the love of the other person.
My Fair Lady, to be staged at the National Theater of Szeged, will retell the age-old story in a fresh, passionate tone, while at the same time offering a classical presentation with traditional music and dazzling visuals.
The premiere of the play will be on Friday, October 11, at 7 pm at the National Theater of Szeged.
