New ethnography exhibition opened at Móra Ferenc Museum

A new ethnographic permanent exhibition was opened in the Móra Ferenc Museum in Szeged on Wednesday, June 12.

At the 130-square-meter exhibition, visitors can see around 200 objects, each of which revives an old craft or folk tradition with the help of various audiovisual devices. The exhibition presents the traditions of Szeged slippers, blue-dyeing, knife-making, and the bustling world of the old markets, among other things, and visitors can also learn about grape and paprika growing. With the help of interactive elements, visitors can listen to tales, legends, and folk songs – all in the Szeged dialect.

At the opening event, Ottó Fogas, director of the Móra Ferenc Museum, Katalin Végh, coordinator of the Hungarian Genius Program, and Szilárd Demeter, director general of the Hungarian National Museum, welcomed the visitors. The Móra Ferenc Museum's new permanent exhibition was opened with the introductory remarks of ethnographer László Mód, assistant professor of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Szeged.

As Ildikó Bárkányi, the curator of the exhibition explained, the material of the new exhibition consists entirely of objects from the collection of the Ferenc Móra Museum. Roughly 90 percent of the photos and recordings shown in the exhibition are from the Móra Museum's archive, only a few were borrowed from partner institutions and the national archive.

Note that the language of the exhibition is Hungarian!
