Szeged celebrates 20th anniversary of Hungary's accession to the European Union

Szeged celebrates the 20th anniversary of Hungary's accession to the European Union with a free concert by the Szeged Symphony Orchestra on May 1, 2024, at Széchenyi Square.

At the celebration – organized by the city of Szeged – 57 musicians of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and 80 singers of the Vaszy Viktor Choir will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Ode to Joy – the anthem of the European Union. Gergely Dubóczky, artistic director of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the performance.

Together with the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and the Viktor Vaszy Choir, four soloists will sing at the concert at Széchenyi Square – Lilla Horti, soprano, Dorottya Láng, mezzo-soprano, Barna Bartos, tenorist, and opera singer (bass) Krisztián Cser. Schiller's famous poem will be performed in German.

One thousand chairs will be placed at Széchenyi Square for the audience. The area will be closed for parking from 20:00 on April 30 until 24:00 on May 2. Before the event, cars left in the parking lots will be removed and moved to free parking lots nearby.

The concert will be broadcast live on an LED wall at Széchenyi Square and can later be streamed on Szeged TV's Facebook page and YouTube channel.
