The Jungle Book returns to Szeged National Theater in a bold new adaptation

After over 20 years, The Jungle Book returns to the Szeged National Theater with a bold new adaptation, premiering on January 24, 2025, under the direction of Kristóf Widder.

After more than two decades, the beloved musical The Jungle Book makes its triumphant return to the Szeged National Theater. This hit production by László Dés, Péter Geszti, and Pál Békés will premiere on January 24, reimagined in a bold and dynamic adaptation directed by Kristóf Widder.

Rehearsals officially began today with a read-through session, marking the start of the production process. László Barnák, General Director of the Szeged National Theater, emphasized that the play offers carefree entertainment and relaxation for audiences of all ages, creating a perfect opportunity for families to enjoy quality time together at the theater. The Szeged ensemble, joined by guest artists, will bring this popular musical to life, presenting exciting creative opportunities for both the cast and the production team.

“When I received the invitation, I immediately began considering how to elevate this production and make it edgier because it’s such a bold story,” explained director Kristóf Widder. “That’s why we’re striving to be cool in both the visuals and the overall concept.”

The story delves into themes of community, belonging, and the balance between preserving one’s identity and adapting to fit in. Anna Kupás’s set design captures the essence of childhood through a playground setting, brought to life in the style of pop-up storybooks. “My aim wasn’t to illustrate a jungle but to evoke a feeling—the magic of playing as a child on a playground or in a forest,” said Kupás.

Kata Pető’s costume designs complement this imaginative space, blurring the lines between humans and animals to underscore the shared experience of the characters. The production will feature a dual cast and the dynamic contribution of the Szeged National Theater’s dance ensemble, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience.

More information about the upcoming musical can be found on the Szeged National Theater’s website.

Note: the language of the musical is Hungarian.
