Lonesome West rehearsals started at the National Theater of Szeged
The rehearsal process of Martin McDonagh's play The Lonesome West started on Thursday with a reading at the Szeged National Theater.
"We think it is important that in addition to the classics, such as Bulgakov and Brecht, contemporary authors, who are present in the theaters of the world, are also represented in Szeged," - said László Barnák, general director, recalling that the audience of the Szeged National Theatre has already seen Martin McDonagh's black comedy A Very, Very, Very Dark Matter. "In this production, too, we can expect the author's usual eloquence, so the theater recommends the play for audiences over the age of 16," Barnák added.
Director Gábor Koltai M. emphasized that not only the original work but also the Hungarian translation by Dániel Varró is extremely powerful – its language is wonderful and full of dark humor.
The story is about two brothers, Coleman and Valene, who have been at war since time immemorial in an isolated farmhouse on the edge of a remote Irish village. Their never-ending battle flares up daily under new pretexts, such as the recent death of their father, various plastic statues, magazines, a sip of drink, cows, women, a dog's (cut off) ear, or a bag of chips.
They themselves may not understand the reason for the fight - annoying each other, teasing each other, threatening each other with a double-barreled shotgun has almost become a way of life. Father Welsh, who has long tried to make peace between them, is hampered in his ministry by nothing more than his massive alcoholism and his regularly shaken faith. And then there's Girleen, a seventeen-year-old girl who has captured the hearts of both brothers...
The Lonesome West – in Hungarian Vaknyugat – directed by Gábor Koltai M. and performed by Andrea Menczel, Zénó Kárász, Kristóf Poroszlay, and Zsolt Vicei, will premiere in the Szeged Kisszínház on December 13, 2024.
The language of the play is Hungarian.
