Szeged New Synagogue celebrates 120th anniversary
On May 18-19, 2023, the Jewish community in Szeged will be celebrating the 120th anniversary of the New Synagogue’s consecration.
Talks and presentations about Szeged Jews, as well as the Synagogue’s history and role in the local community, will be held on both days. On May 18, those interested can visit both the old and the new Synagogue on a guided tour led by spiritual leader Attila Kendrusz (note that this program has an entrance fee).
A festive service, to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the consecration of the New Synagogue, will be held on May 19. The service will start at 6:30 pm and will be open to the public — everyone is welcome. Men are asked to arrive with their heads covered.
Following the general rules, men and women will be seated separately during the service - men to the right, and women to the left, the spiritual leader of the congregation shared in a video message.
More information, including the dates of further guided tours to the two buildings, can be found on the Synagogue's Facebook page.
Please note that the programs are in Hungarian.
The spectacular art nouveau building of the New Synagogue of Szeged — the 4th largest synagogue in the world — was designed by Lipót Baumhorn in 1903. The interior features breathtaking blue and gold colors and windows by Miksa Róth, the era's internationally acclaimed stained glass artist.
