Yael Rasooly to perform award-winning show Paper Cut in Szeged

Yael Rasooly will perform her award-winning show Paper Cut during the World Festival of Puppets, an accompanying event of the 10th Theater Olympics in Hungary. In Szeged, Paper Cut will be on show at Kövér Béla Puppet Theater on Friday, April 14.

World Festival of Puppets spans from Easter through to Midsummer's Eve - from April 9 to July 30, 2023. The event is a joint artistic concept of 12 Hungarian puppet theaters and is organized by the Association of Hungarian Puppet Artists. The 3-months long festival will feature puppet and street theatre performances, workshops, exhibitions, and other creative projects, in several locations throughout the country.

The festival is an opportunity to connect Hungarian puppetry art to the international performing arts scene and present it on a recognizable scale as a value-creating, high-quality performing art category that can address not only children but all age groups. The 2023 World Festival of Puppets will feature 9 workshops, 3 exhibitions, 6 creative projects, 53 international, 57 local, and 7 transborder puppet and street theaters. The 332 planned performances are expected to attract over 70,000 spectators.

Paper Cut by Yael Rasooly

Jerusalem-born Yael Rasooly is a theater director, puppeteer, and singer who has presented her shows and performances in hundreds of venues in more than 30 countries around the world. Yael's work has been featured in publications such as Télérama, The Guardian, and The New York Times.

Paper Cut is the story of a lonely secretary who stays in the office after everyone else has gone home. Using photos from old magazines, she escapes into a world of daydreams and becomes a glamorous movie star of the 1940s who finds her ideal love at last. But as the story unfolds, imagination and reality collide, and her romantic tale turns into a Hitchcockian nightmare.

Yael Rasooly's one-woman show reveals the obsessions and dangers of romantic fantasies. Using paper cut-outs and object theatre, she creates a tension that is both absurd, painful, and humorous.

On April 14, in addition to Yael's performance, the Szeged audience will also enjoy a three-item wine tasting - courtesy of the Gedeon winery - Super 8 machines, and the atmosphere of the 1920s. The organizers encourage everyone to arrive dressed in the 20s style.
