August 20 State Foundation Day Celebration in Szeged

Update, Aug. 20, 9:05: 10 a.m. festive program at Széchenyi Square cancelled due to stormy weather

The August 20 State Foundation Day celebration in Szeged will last 3 days in 2022, from Friday, August 19, to Sunday, August 21. During the 3-day celebration organized by the Szeged Fair and Market Operator Ltd. (Szegedi Városkép és Piac Kft.), various concerts, food, and drink stalls, and a handicraft market await visitors at Széchenyi Square.

On Friday, August 19, programs start at 2 p.m. and the last concert begins at 10 p.m.

On August 20, which is Saint Stephen's Day and the day of the foundation of Hungary, festive programs start at 10:00 in the morning. In the afternoon, brass bands and various concerts await visitors. The Útközband Band closes the day with a street party starting at 10 p.m.

Sunday morning programs start with music at 9 a.m., followed by a kids' concert at 10 a.m. by the Peter & Pan duo. In the afternoon, acrobatic dance and fitness performances will entertain visitors, and the event continues with music, with the last program starting at 9:30 p.m.

Joining many other cities in Hungary, Szeged too cancels the usual August 20 fireworks this year. The city decided to spend the costs of the fireworks to support low-income households during the present financial crisis. Another reason to cancel the fireworks is the fire hazard due to the extreme drought in the region.

Note: Organizers reserve the right to make changes in the program without prior announcement.
