Japanese Film Festival Online 2024 streams free of charge between June 5 and July 3

The Japanese Film Festival Online 2024 can be streamed from today in Hungary. This year's online Japanese film festival features 23 films, which can be streamed free of charge between June 5-19, and two mini-series, which can be streamed between June 19 and July 3, 2024.

According to the organizer's announcement, the Budapest Office of the Japan Foundation will present the Japanese Film Festival Online again this year after a one-year hiatus. Between June 5 and July 3, 2024, 23 contemporary Japanese films and 2 mini-series can be streamed for free from anywhere in Hungary, in their original language, with Hungarian or English subtitles. The selection includes both award-winning works recognized by critics and entertaining films.

The 2024 online film festival features Kohei Yoshino's Anime Supremacy!, which collected 10 nominations and won the Best New Actor Award at the Japan Academy Film Prize this year. Through the "duel" of two filmmakers, the film presents people who are passionate about anime. The film, full of exciting and dramatic twists, gives a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes secrets of anime production. The anime scenes in the film were made by the best creators, including the team of Production I.G.

The Lines That Define Me, an award-winning film by Norihiro Koizumi, one of the most promising Asian talents, can also be streamed during the festival. Awarded at the 2023 Kinema Junpo Awards, the coming-of-age story is about a young man's loss and rebirth. The two main characters of the film are two hugely popular Japanese stars, Ryusei Yokohama and Kaya Kiyohara. The spectacular live-painted scenes of traditional Japanese ink painting, Sumi-e, make the film even more impressive.

This year's selection also includes Keisuke Kinoshita's classic, Twenty-Four Eyes, which won the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 1955 Golden Globe and was nominated in the Best Film category at the Venice Film Festival. In the film, taking place in 1928, the elementary school teacher Hisako Oishi is viewed with suspicion by the village residents because of her modern views, but her students – twelve children – soon begin to like her. Years pass, the war breaks out, and the teacher is horrified to see the enthusiasm of the boys. Eight years later, she decides to go back to teaching, but only a few of the former twelve children are still alive.
