Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsa Mihalek wins Oscar for Poor Things

Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsa Mihalek won an Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards for her work on the movie Poor Things on March 10, 2024.

The movie Poor Things, directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and filmed at Origo Studios in Budapest, was nominated in 11 categories from which it took home 4 Oscars: Best Actress in a Leading Role for Emma Stone, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar for Best Production Design was awarded jointly to British production designers Shona Heath and James Price and Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsa Mihalek. Heath, Price, and Mihalek previously also won the 2024 BAFTA Award for Production Design on Poor Things.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. During the gala, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presented Academy Awards in 23 categories honoring films released in 2023.

Zsuzsa Mihalek is the second Hungarian set decorator awarded by the Academy in recent years. In 2022, set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos received an Oscar for her work on Denis Villeneuve’s movie Dune, she received the award jointly with production designer Patrice Vermette.
