Hungary experienced second mildest winter since 1901
The winter of 2022/2023 was the second mildest and the ninth wettest in Hungary on average since the beginning of meteorological data registration, 1901 - announced OMSZ, the National Meteorological Service.
After evaluating the data of their measurements, they found that the average temperature of the season was 3.1 degrees, 2.7 degrees Celsius higher than the average of 0.3 degrees for the years 1991-2020. A series of mild winters, which has been going on for the sixth year, continued in Hungary, and in the last ten years, only the winter of 2016/2017 was colder than average.
Since 1901, this year was the second winter in which the average temperature in the country reached 3 degrees. All three winter months had temperatures above average: December was 2.1, January 4.5, and February was 1.6 degrees above average.
The wet weather of the 2022 fall continued in the winter as well: according to preliminary data, the average amount of precipitation in Hungary was 173.1 millimeters, which is 150 percent of the climatic norm - 115.3 millimeters - making this the ninth wettest winter since the beginning of the 20th century.
