Subway restaurant in downtown Szeged shuts down

Szeged’s only Subway restaurant will close after March 31, 2025, its final day of operation, as the local franchise owner steps away from the business.

Subway ranks among the world’s largest fast-food franchises, with around 37,000 restaurants in over 100 countries, best known for its customizable sandwiches and quick, made-to-order meals. The Szeged restaurant, based in the city center on Kárász Street, is co-located with Rumilé Café, which is also closing on March 31.

As reported by szegeder.hu, the building's owner, Oren Friedmann, decided to step away from the business after more than 14 years, citing family reasons. While the restaurant had remained fully operational, the plan was always to continue only until a new tenant or buyer was found.

With no successor in place — and the terrace permit for the space expiring at the end of the month — Friedmann has decided to shut the doors permanently.

At this point, it's unclear whether someone will take on the franchise and reopen Subway in Szeged.

The chain first appeared in Szeged at the Atrium shopping center, with the Kárász Street restaurant following in December 2013. At that time, Subway's regional representative expressed ambitions of growing to 100 Hungarian locations. More than a decade later, Subway operates only in Budapest, Biatorbágy, Debrecen — and Szeged for two more days.
