SZTE Science Park's new infrastructure unveiled

The University of Szeged (SZTE) has completed a major infrastructure and road network project at its Science Park, funded by a HUF 9.5 billion state investment. The official unveiling ceremony, held on February 7, 2025, brought together university leaders, government officials, industry representatives, and the media.

Rector Prof. Dr. László Rovó highlighted the significance of the development, comparing the new utilities to a body's veins and nerves, essential for functioning. He reflected on the transformation of the site, formerly Soviet barracks, into a modern innovation hub, home to the ELI ALPS laser research center and Rheinmetall, which is set to develop next-generation mobility solutions.

Minister for Energy Csaba Lantos emphasized the need for stronger ties between academia and industry. He pointed out that economic and scientific progress must be aligned to remain competitive globally, with SZTE's Science Park serving as a prime example of this collaboration.

Chancellor Dr. Judit Fendler explained that this project is SZTE’s first large-scale effort beyond education and research, aiming to attract leading companies and drive innovation. The new infrastructure, completed in just over a year and a half, includes roads, water, sewage, gas, electricity, telecommunications, and a stormwater drainage system. The 85-hectare park now provides an ideal environment for business partnerships and high-tech research.

Among the first companies to establish operations is Rheinmetall, which plans to manufacture hydrogen-powered vehicle components in Szeged. The Chancellor expressed confidence that this investment would attract more companies, strengthen the regional economy, and encourage talented graduates to stay in Szeged instead of seeking opportunities elsewhere.

To mark the occasion, Lantos, Rovó, and Fendler unveiled a commemorative plaque, celebrating the Science Park as a key driver of innovation and economic development in the region.
