BYD's Szeged plant scheduled to start production in second half of 2025
BYD's goal is to start production in the Szeged plant in the second half of 2025, said Zhang Bo, deputy CEO of BYD's logistics department, in an exclusive interview with local news outlet szeged.hu.
The in-depth interview covers, among other things, the number of prospective employees, the production capacity of the soon-to-be-built factory, and the environmental and noise impact.
"At our Szeged plant, we plan to produce low-emission, electric, and petrol plug-in hybrid vehicles, indirectly contributing to the European Union's climate protection and sustainability goals. The plant will initially have a capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year, with a target of 300,000 vehicles per year over time. We aim to start production in the second half of 2025.", reads the article. "The number of jobs will increase gradually as capacity increases. Initially, 3-4 thousand people will be employed, and in years to come, up to 10 thousand when the plant reaches full capacity."
About the environmental impacts, the deputy CEO explained that "BYD's mission is to create a more sustainable, greener future, and the environment is at the heart of everything we do. In the case of the Szeged plant, we are committed to complying with all Hungarian and European environmental regulations during both construction and operation. We also strictly adhere to all relevant environmental limits and are open to involving external, independent partners, such as experts from universities or NGOs, in the monitoring of our emissions."
The interview also discusses the intention of future cooperation with the University of Szeged, mentioning that discussions with SZTE, regarding various subjects, have already commenced. According to Zhang Bo, the University of Szeged will play an indispensable role in the operations of BYD Szeged, offering invaluable expertise and fostering innovation. "As we advance with our project, we aspire to fortify this partnership, collaborating on initiatives that will be advantageous to both our company and the local community.", he stated.
Regarding whether batteries would be produced at the plant, the response was no. Instead, the batteries will be manufactured in China and then shipped to Szeged for installation.
"Appropriate measures will be taken to control exhaust gas, wastewater emissions, noise, and traffic during the various phases so as not to disrupt the daily lives of people living in the area. We will use purification equipment to reduce emissions, recycle wastewater, and treat it strictly," the deputy CEO said when asked how much inconvenience the factory construction will cause to the people living in the area.
