Dr. László Botka, the mayor of Szeged was re-elected in the municipal elections on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

Botka, who has been the mayor of Szeged for 22 years, achieved his best result so far, receiving almost three times as many votes as the Fidesz candidate who came second. After his victory of 67.75 percent (47 thousand 601 votes), László Botka will start his next – sixth – mayoral term in October.

The candidates of the Összefogás Szegedért Egyesület (ENG: Unity for Szeged Association), which is behind the mayor and his team, achieved overwhelming success too – they won in 18 out of 19 districts.

Botka, a lawyer by profession, was a representative of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) between 1994–1998 and 2002–2014 and has been the mayor of Szeged since 2002. In 2019, Botka announced that he had left the MSZP and would continue his political work as a member of the Unity for Szeged Association. He is married and has three daughters.
