Faces of Szeged exhibition at Móra Museum

A new temporary exhibition titled "Faces of Szeged" opened at the Móra Ferenc Museum on Monday, May 6. The exhibition features a selection from the museum's fine art collection, presenting paintings that have never been exhibited before.

At the new exhibition, visitors can see paintings by artists from or connected to Szeged, including works by Sándor Nyilasy, József Szöri, Nana Kukovetz, and László Vinkler. There are many "treasures" in the fine art collection of the Móra Ferenc Museum: including paintings that are rarely or never exhibited. That is why the museum considered it important to organize the exhibition so that those interested could get to know these treasures too.

Restoration work was needed to exhibit the works in a suitable condition. Many underwent cleaning, while others required tear restoration.

The exhibition, which opened on Monday afternoon, features a total of seventy-four works by fourteen Szeged painters.

Art historian Kata Hári, the curator of the exhibition, spoke, among other things, about how the title of the exhibition, Faces of Szeged, is also a play on words since the faces of Szeged are the painters themselves, who appear in the exhibition not only with their works, but also with their self-portraits, and each of whom is connected to the city in one way or another.

"The images in the exhibition are assembled into a single image like a mosaic. At the same time, the works of art and the life stories that accompany them also reveal the relationships between the artists. They often had a close friendship or master-student relationship not only with each other, but also with poets, writers, and thinkers living and creating in the city at the time, such as Gyula Juhász, Ferenc Móra or Sándor Bálint," said Kata Hári.

The exhibition can be seen at the Móra Ferenc Museum until June 9, 2024.
