Christmas Surprise: new exhibition showcases the diversity of contemporary art at Kiss Kunszt Gallery
An exhibition titled Christmas Surprise (Karácsonyi meglepetés) opened yesterday afternoon at the Kiss Kunszt Gallery in Szeged, showcasing the works of nearly thirty contemporary visual artists. The group exhibition combines pieces created at the Csongrád Plein Air International Art Camp alongside works by renowned Szeged-based artists. Art historian Imre Nagy inaugurated the exhibition.
Despite its festive title, the artworks were not selected with a holiday theme in mind. Instead, the aim was to assemble a diverse collection where everyone can discover pieces that resonate with their individual tastes. The exhibition features a variety of styles, techniques, and themes, offering visitors a richly layered visual experience.
Imre Nagy emphasized the exhibition's diversity, highlighting the breadth of artistic techniques and genres on display. From traditional oil paintings to photography-based monotypes, computer graphics, and sculptures, the exhibition reveals the unique approaches of each artist. Nagy noted that the true appeal of the exhibition lies in its ability to showcase not only the artists' chosen methods but also the unique perspectives they bring to their subjects, with each artist creating a distinct and self-contained universe through their work.
He also reflected on how our relationship with images and visual phenomena has transformed in the modern age. "I believe that in today’s overwhelming flood of images—where visual phenomena of varying quality and intensity pour over us from television, smartphones, billboards, and flashing advertisements—we must appreciate the presence of visual artists who, in the solitude of creative silence, can produce works that compel us to reflect on our world, see aspects of it through fresh eyes, and inspire thoughts we might not have reached on our own."
The opening event was further enriched by a performance from Hajnalka Csepregi, flutist of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra.
