26th International Tisza Fish Festival

The 26th International Tisza Fish Festival will be held between September 1-3, 2023, at the Huszár Mátyás Quay and the Újszeged Partfürdő.

Each year, the event attracts thousands of curious visitors wanting to experience the vibe of the festival and taste the famous fish soup of Szeged. So much so that this year even the team of Flavorful Origins, a Chinese documentary series popular on Netflix, will attend the Tisza Fish Festival.

During the three days, local inns' tents as well as food trucks will line up on Huszár Mátyás Quay and offer not only fish soup but fried fish and various other fast food options. Most of the food stalls, along with local breweries and wineries, will be on one side of the quay, while the other side will be packed with artisans and vendors selling handicraft products.

Sándor Frank, the award-winning master chef of Szeged's iconic Halászcsárda, stands behind the original idea of the festival. The event has been privately organized from the beginning, and the costs have risen significantly recently, Frank told Szeged.hu.

"During the three days of the fish festival, more than twenty thousand fish juices will be sold, not to mention the other fish dishes. As usual, dozens of teams entered the cooking competition at Partfürdő, where groups of friends, companies, businesses, institutions, and political parties will compare their fish cooking skills" — he added.

Fish soup will be cooked in giant cauldrons at the remains of the former water bastion, next to the Móra Ferenc Museum. One of the highlights of the event will be a witch arriving on a parachute to bring the paprika needed for the fish soup on Saturday at 11 a.m
