Szeged Christmas Market opens in less than a month

The 2023 Szeged Christmas Market — in Hungarian Szegedi Karácsonyi Hetek, which translates to Szeged Christmas Weeks — will open on December 1.

After the Christmas lights are turned on, the center of Szeged will transform into a buzzing cavalcade of locals and tourists, especially on the weekends. During the Advent season, food and drink stalls will be dotting the main squares of the city center of Szeged, with the sweet smell of winter spices lingering around the whole downtown area.

As in previous years, the main location of the Szeged Christmas Market will be Dóm Square, where the city's most iconic landmark, the Votive Church serves as a backdrop.

Dóm Square will await visitors with one of the most beautiful Christmas decors in Hungary, a 50-m tall Ferris wheel, the city's giant Advent wreath, a straw labyrinth, and a large variety of gift and food stalls. Two selfie points will be a new addition this year.

The range at the food stalls is quite wide every year, from traditional winter food like liver sausage or blood pudding to popular street food like gyros and chimney cake.

The Christmas market at Dóm Square is a good place to do Christmas shopping with a wide variety of handmade souvenirs, from unique ceramics to wooden toys, hand-poured candles, and much more.

A series of programs will entertain visitors over the weekends leading up to Christmas, including music performances and the extremely popular fire juggler show.

On Sundays, public figures of Szeged will light the candles on the city's Advent wreath.

As in previous years, Dugonics Square will host a large lit-up deer and a Santa Clause installation in front of the Rector's Building of the University of Szeged, both serving as popular Instagram spots. Dugonics Square will host a food and drink stall too.

Each year, the city's Christmas tree is set up at Klauzál Square. Here too will be a stall offering hot tea, mulled wine, and other drinks. On some days, there will be Christmas performances at Klauzál Square, organized by Rotary Club.
