Szeged Eye: the new 50 m-high Ferris Wheel at Dóm Square awaits passengers

Ferris Wheel at Dóm Square Szeged

The newest attraction in Szeged, a 50 m-high Ferris Wheel at Dóm Square - already referred to as Szeged Eye on social media - has been set into operation and awaits passengers since November 4.

On Friday, the observation wheel took its first passengers above downtown Szeged at 2 p.m. Members of the press were also invited for the afternoon of the launch by SZVP - Szegedi Városkép és Piac, the organizer of the Szeged Christmas Weeks. See our photo gallery of the event below.

The new Ferris Wheel started working one week after all the elements arrived at the square. Construction began on October 27 and the structure was standing ready on October 30. This is the biggest Ferris Wheel so far in the history of the Szeged Christmas Weeks, with a maximum capacity of 180 people.

"Szeged Eye" exceeds the wheels of the previous years in more ways. It is approximately 10 meters taller than last year's wheel and instead of open cabins has almost entirely closed ones with enough room for 6 people per cabin. Each cabin has two small open windows and the lights inside can be turned on and off manually. One round is 6 minutes long, during which the wheel makes 3 full turns.

At its highest point, the wheel takes visitors to almost the same level as the viewing terrace high up in the Dóm's left tower. With clear skies, all the major sights of Szeged can be seen, including the New Synagogue, the Franciscan Church at Mátyás Square, the Water Tower at Szent István Square, Móra Museum, and the Belvárosi Bridge over the Tisza, but the water tower and the Telekom tower in Rókus are also in view. The Dóm itself can be observed from a totally new perspective.

The new Ferris Wheel will probably give the best night views during the Szeged Christmas Market between November 25 and December 24, 2022. The main site of this year's Christmas fair will be Dóm Square, with a handicraft market, food and drink stalls, a straw labyrinth for kids, a huge advent wreath, and festive lights. According to the present schedule, the wheel will operate until January 8, 2023.
