Szeged Contemporary Dance Company captivates Europe with ambitious tour

The Szeged Contemporary Dance Company, renowned for its innovative reinterpretations of classical works, is making waves across Europe with an ambitious tour that expands its international presence and sets new milestones. This celebrated Hungarian troupe has brought its artistry to major cultural hubs, offering audiences a fresh perspective on beloved classics while achieving record-breaking success.

A bold reimagining of Swan Lake

The dance company's 2024 autumn tour commenced in Paris at Le 13e Art Theatre, where the company premiered its modern ballet, Black Swan. Running from October 29 to November 3, 2024, this reinterpretation of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake impressed Parisian audiences with its contemporary choreography and bold theatricality.

Expanding horizons

Following its Paris debut, the company returned home and premiered their revamped Nutcracker in Szeged on November 15. A week later, they traveled to Helsinki, where they performed Black Swan at the Savoy Theatre on November 21 and 22. These performances showcased the troupe’s commitment to reaching diverse audiences while maintaining artistic excellence.

Brussels takes center stage

The company’s European journey continued in Brussels with an ambitious series of performances at the iconic Cirque Royal. The lineup included:

  • Carmina Burana (November 26-27)

  • Black Swan (November 28-29)

  • The Nutcracker (December 1)

Additionally, the Liszt Institute Brussels hosted a special event, Contemporary Dance in Focus: the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company, on November 25. This included discussions with Artistic Director Tamás Juronics and costume designer Bianca Imelda Jeremias, alongside a stunning exhibition of costume designs.

Breaking records in 2024

Last year, the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company set a record with 105 performances. However, according to the company’s director, András Echéry-Pataki, they plan to surpass this milestone in the 2024-25 season. He noted that international tours are crucial for financial stability, especially given the unpredictability of Hungary’s domestic grant system. These tours provide not only funding but also valuable opportunities for cultural exchange. The company performed 25 times abroad last season; this year, they are set to dance in 40 foreign shows – explained the director at the dress rehearsal of The Nutcracker, held at the Szeged National Theater on November 14.

Looking ahead: Belgium and beyond

The company’s past successes in Belgium are well-demonstrated, with plans to return in April 2025 for a nationwide tour featuring Black Swan in seven cities. In May 2025, they will guest perform in Basel and Zurich, further cementing their presence on the European stage.

Pushing boundaries

The Szeged Contemporary Dance Company has earned acclaim for blending tradition with innovation. Their performances, from Carmina Burana to The Nutcracker, have captivated audiences across Europe, showcasing the troupe's dedication to redefining how classical music and dance are experienced.

With an unprecedented number of international performances this season, the company is setting new standards in contemporary dance. Their relentless drive and artistic vision ensure that their influence will continue to grow, leaving a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
