Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó visited SZTE

One week after she received the news about winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine, Katalin Karikó flew to Hungary and visited - among others - the University of Szeged on October 12, 2023.

Professor Karikó spent half a day at her alma mater and attended a celebratory meeting, followed by a press conference. Later in the afternoon, she met with researchers of SZTE and held two seminars - one for Hungarian and one for international students.

After she arrived at the university, Dr. Karikó, touched by the huge crowd celebrating her in front of the Rector’s Building, held a brief speech. She recalled the time when she studied at the University of Szeged, and spoke about her Szeged memories, adding “I was married here and our daughter was born here. All good things happened to me here.”

The next day, Professor Karikó started working at her new office, which belonged to the other Nobel laureate of the University of Szeged, Albert Szent-Györgyi, and was handed over to Karikó during the previous day.

A detailed article about the Karikó visit can be found here.
