Christmas gifts for foodies

Quite a few places in Szeged offer gastro gifts for Christmas. Emmarozs, for example, offers a gift box in two versions, containing traditional handmade Christmas rolls called Bejgli with a twist: it's made with a special sourdough. Other specialties like quince chutney and duck rillettes - made at Emmarozs Deli - also pop into the boxes, as well as a bottle of Italian sparkling wine or a mulled wine essence, cookies, and meringue, depending on the box type. A third gift box offers a selection of cookie specialties.

The gift boxes can be ordered online or bought directly at Emmarozs until December 23 or until stocks last. December 24 is the last day to pick up your Christmas orders - don't forget to check the opening hours in advance! If you're only looking for a smaller gift, you can simply buy these delicacies one by one.

Last-minute Christmas gifts for coffee addicts

Most specialty cafés in Szeged stock smaller bags of coffee, serving as excellent last-minute Christmas gifts. Kék Elefánt at Klauzál Square offers gifts like cute handmade ceramic coffee cups with an elephant motif, Szeged-themed postcards, including an illustration about the café itself, t-shirts, hats, and some of the best coffee in town.

Hét Kávézó, on Horváth Mihály Street, is stocked up with some excellent coffees before Christmas but you have to hurry because these bags will be bought quicker than you can say Merry Christmas in Hungarian. At the moment, a fresh batch of Brazilian, Kenyan, Ethiopian, Guatemalan, Ruandan, and Peruvian beans are waiting for coffee addicts - or their friends and relatives - to take them home. Fun fact: Hét Kávézó does its own roasting under the name Coffee Bud.

Barista Goods, on Oskola Street, offers specialty coffee, tea, a very high-quality ginger shot, and a wide range of presents from pins to soy candles, from yoga mats to fun socks, and so on.

If you still don't know what to choose, visit the Szeged Christmas Market at Dóm Square. This is probably one of the best places to look for a last-minute gift. You'll find all sorts of handmade ceramics, a huge selection of beeswax candles, handmade toys, leather products, jewelry, Christmas decoration, and so much more here. Edible gifts include a wide variety of honey and truffle products, meat products, cheese, and sweets... lots of sweets.

Should you get hungry or tired, the different food and drink stalls dotting the square have all sorts of winter treats, from the classic mulled wine and hot chocolate to flatbreads, pies, chimney cake, and other must-haves of the local cuisine. To round up your visit, you can take a bird's-eye view of the city from atop Szeged Eye, the 50 m tall Ferris wheel, brought here, especially for the advent weeks.
